Chef Vikas Khanna’s restaurant Bungalow has quickly become a go-to spot for food lovers in New York City, a place many foodies hope to score a reservation at just to experience the chef’s creations. The restaurant has also become a favourite among celebrities, and the latest to join the list is Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York City, who recently enjoyed a special Iftar meal prepared by the chef at the popular restaurant.
Vikas Khanna Prepares Iftar Meal For Zohran Mamdani

Taking to his Instagram, Chef Vikas Khanna penned a special note for Zohran Mamdani as he celebrated Iftar at the chef’s restaurant, Bungalow. In the video, the chef can be seen decorating the restaurant as usual with fresh flowers, candles, and incense sticks.
Keeping the ongoing Ramadan in mind, they have created a “Table of Grace” at the restaurant. The table holds “small tokens of faith and tradition” like Islamic prayer beads, henna cones, artworks often hung on car mirrors, Muslim prayer caps, ittar bottles, surma containers, and several other things.
At Bungalow, while breaking his fast, the mayor of New York City was served a date and then a special Iftar meal prepared by the chef himself. Interestingly, Vikas Khanna shared that he first met Zohran Mamdani back in 2001, thanks to Mira Nair, the mayor’s mother.
The chef also spoke about how Mira was “one of the most supportive humans” he met in New York and how they have stayed in touch over the years. He added that he has also catered several events for her over time.

Chef Shares A Special Note For The NYC Mayor
“I had just survived homelessness, left a very abusive job, and started working at Salaam Bombay restaurant in Tribeca. I loved the name — it was also my favourite film by the iconic Mira Nair. One day, Mira walked in with her very young 8-year-old son, Zohran,” he shared in the post.
“And today, 25+ years later, I had the honour of cooking for that same young boy—now a global leader shaping the future of New York City. Life truly comes full circle,” he said in the post’s caption. “Thank you, Zohran Mamdani, for celebrating Iftar with us today. Cooking for you was deeply personal 25 years ago—and it feels even more meaningful today,” he added.

Life has truly come full circle for both men, and it’s heartwarming to see how their paths have crossed again.
