Paush Amavasya 2025: Date, Rituals, Significance & Everything You Should Know

One of the important days in the Hindu calendar that people look forward to is Paush Amavasya. This day is dedicated to honouring ancestors and remembering those who have left this world. On this day, Hindus perform rituals to seek blessings for peace, prosperity, and harmony within the family. Scroll down to know more!

When Will Paush Amavasya Fall In 2025

Every year, Paush Amavasya falls during the Krishna Paksha, also known as the waning phase of the moon. It’s because the new moon day is considered very powerful for spiritual activities. As per The Free Press Journal, the day is also important for meditation, charity, and other spiritual practices. Many devotees donate food, clothes, or money to the poor, Brahmins, and those in need. Feeding animals like cows, dogs, and crows is also seen as lucky, as it is believed to be like offering food to the ancestors.

In 2025, Paush Amavasya will be observed on Friday, December 19. The Amavasya period will begin at 4:59 AM on December 19 and end at 7:12 AM on December 20, according to Drik Panchang.

Ritual Followed During This Day

On Paush Amavasya, devotees wake up early and take a bath in a holy river before sunrise. They wear clean clothes and offer water to Lord Sun as part of the rituals. Families often gather at rivers, lakes, or sacred ghats, including famous places like Gaya, Varanasi, and Haridwar, to perform these ceremonies.

According to The Free Press Journal, important rituals on this day include Tarpan, offering water to ancestors; Pind Daan, giving rice balls mixed with sesame; and Shraddha, a prayer for departed souls. These rituals are believed to bring peace to ancestors and strengthen the bond between the living and the departed.

Paush Amavasya is more than just rituals. It is a time to remember family roots and traditions, honour ancestors, and keep the connection between generations alive. By performing these rituals and giving to the needy, Hindus show gratitude and keep the spirit of giving alive. The day also promotes mindfulness, respect for ancestors, and spiritual growth while reinforcing family values and cultural heritage.
