The electric train with modern features will connect Tripura with southern Assam. Here’s everything you need to know about this new service and what it means for travellers.
Northeast India Gets Its First MEMU Train
Indian Railways has now introduced the first Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train in the Northeast region. The launch marks a major step towards modernising rail transport in the country. According to The Indian Express, the service is more energy-efficient and cost-effective than Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains. This new electric train will be operated and maintained by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone.
According to The Economic Times, the train has a carrying capacity of 3,600 passengers and connects Agartala in Tripura with Karimganj in Assam. This is definitely great news for travellers, who will now get faster, safer and more comfortable travel in a modern train.

This Electric Train Will Run Six Days A Week
The state-of-the-art MEMU train will make daily commuting easier and more time-efficient between these two destinations. It will operate six days a week. This means daily commuters, students, office-goers, traders and tourists will be able to benefit from this train conveniently. The service will cover the 205-km journey in approximately six hours and 30 minutes.
Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, shared with The Indian Express that the MEMU train also ensures smoother rides, lower noise levels and zero emissions at the point of operation, which contributes to Indian Railways’ commitment to a greener and more sustainable transport system.
But that’s not all. This new MEMU train is also expected to strengthen social and economic ties between the two neighbouring states and contribute to overall regional development. Reportedly, the service will also support local commerce by offering a convenient travel option for small business owners and workers, encouraging more people to travel by train instead of by road.
