Nalsarovar, sprawling over 120.82 square kilometres, is a bird lover’s paradise. Oyt is home to over 250 species of birds, including the graceful flamingos, pelicans, egrets, herons, and storks. The sanctuary especially comes alive during the winter months (November to February) when migratory birds from Siberia, Oman, the UAE, and beyond arrive.

The story of Nalsarovar began in the 15th century when a check dam was built across the Sabarmati River. Originally utilised for irrigation, the sanctuary’s value as a bird habitat was not recognised until the British colonial government recognised its ecological significance in the 20th century. Nalsarovar was formally designated as a bird sanctuary by the Gujarat government in 1969, and it was acknowledged as a Ramsar site in 2012.

The geography of Nalsarovar adds to its allure. The serene lake provides a diverse range of habitats for both resident and migratory birds, as it is surrounded by marshes, grasslands, and thick forests. The landscape is also dotted with “Pilu” trees, well-known for their edible red berries. This makes for an ideal setting for nature lovers to explore and learn.

The best time to visit Nalsarovar is just before sunrise. The calm and quiet of the early morning and the sight of thousands of birds create a surreal experience that no visitor will forget. The peaceful atmosphere here is a perfect contrast to the high-energy excitement of a Coldplay concert—offering the best of both worlds during your trip.

Birdwatching: With over 250 species of birds, Nalsarovar is a dream for birdwatchers. Don’t miss the chance to interact with the local Padhars, traditional folk dancers, artisans, and boatmen who add a unique cultural flavour to the sanctuary.

Whether you’re in Ahmedabad for the Coldplay concert or looking for a quick escape into nature, Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary is an absolute must-visit.
