Due to a technical issue, the National Air Traffic Service (NATS) of Britain was obliged to restrict air traffic on Monday, according to the reports. Additionally, passengers were detained in aircraft on the tarmac and issued delays and cancellations to airlines and airports.

A spokeswoman claimed that to preserve safety, they had implemented traffic flow limitations while they worked on a technical problem. In fact, engineers were trying to identify and address the issue and that UK airspace was not being restricted. The problem was causing significant delays for flights across Europe that were travelling to, from, or through UK airspace, according to Irish air traffic control company AirNav Ireland. The Independent reported that around 1,200 flights to and from the UK were cancelled!

The busiest hub in western Europe, Heathrow, stated that it was working with NATS and other partners at the airport to lessen the effect on travellers.

International flights may have delays, the Scottish carrier Loganair warned earlier on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) that UK air traffic control computer systems had experienced a network breakdown.

British Airways also stated that it was closely collaborating with NATS to determine the impact. Airports including London Luton and Birmingham stated they were working to establish the impact and the timeframe in which normal operations could return.

Dublin Airport advised travellers planning to travel to check the status of their flight with their airline. Air traffic control problems were causing delays and cancellations to some flights into and out of the Irish city.

Due to Monday being a national holiday in several parts of Britain, many travellers reported being stuck on planes on the tarmac waiting to take off or being held in airport buildings in Spain, Portugal, Greece, and other countries.
