As the festive season is in full swing, Indian sweet shops are already buzzing with people eager to buy their favourite treats. However, just when everyone should be enjoying their beloved sweets, a shocking discovery has raised serious concern — especially about everyone’s favourite rasgulla. Authorities have found large quantities of adulterated rasgullas being sold in several parts of the country. Read to know more details.

In a major raid in Jhansi, authorities seized and destroyed 1,500 kilograms of adulterated rasgullas and other sweets. Why? They were found to be adulterated with starch. The Uttar Pradesh Food Safety Team carried out surprise checks and found several items like khoya, milk cakes, and rasgullas that were spoilt or mixed with harmful substances. Experts have warned that consuming such sweets can lead to serious health problems over time, reported NDTV. 

This has left many people confused and worried, not knowing which shops they can trust or if the sweets they’re buying are actually safe to eat. It’s become a real concern during a time meant for celebration.

How To Spot Fake Ragullas

Understanding people’s dilemma on how to figure out the fresh and right way to eat rasgullas, the FSSAI has shared a few easy ways you can spot the difference between a genuine rasgulla and a fake one.

  • First, check the texture. A real rasgulla should feel soft and spongy. If it’s hard, rubbery, or bouncy, it may have been made with chemicals.
  • Next, look at the colour. A good-quality rasgulla is white and slightly glossy, not yellowish or overly bright. If it looks off in colour, it might contain artificial chemicals or dyes.
  • Also, observe the syrup. Authentic rasgullas are completely soaked in clear syrup and should feel moist and fresh, without lumps or hardness. If the syrup looks sticky or smells odd, it’s best to avoid it.
  • Lastly, always buy from shops with an FSSAI license. Check for the official FSSAI logo, license number, and expiry date on the packaging. This ensures that the sweets you’re buying have been prepared and stored under proper safety standards.
