A 22-member trekking team had gone on a trekking expedition to Sahastra Tal on May 29 and was to return on June 7. The team comprised 18 members from Karnataka, one from Maharashtra, and three guides from Uttarkashi. During the trek, they lost their way and were trapped on the route due to the bad weather conditions in the area. Four of these members have been reported dead by the authorities.

As per Uttarkashi District Magistrate Meharban Singh Bisht, while returning from the trek on June 3, they got stuck at Kufri top due to the bad weather. According to India Today, seven trekkers were able to find their way to the base camp. The rest, however, were trapped on the trek route. The authorities quickly launched a rescue operation to save the missing trekkers.
