What’s In It?

From Monday, all foreigners in Portugal with pending applications will be treated as permanent residents till at least the 1st of July. This move is to ensure that the migrants and visitors have access to public services during the coronavirus pandemic. In an interview, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Internal Affairs told Reuters that “In these exceptional times, the rights of migrants must be guaranteed.” Also, this policy has another aim and that is to reduce the contagion risk by reducing the contact between border control service staff and applicants.

What’s More?

Portugal has reported 5,170 Covid-19 cases and has unfortunately faced 100 deaths. Health authorities, however, expect that cases will peak at the end of May. Nevertheless, the death toll is far below neighbouring Spain. The official records show that 580,000 immigrants reside in Portugal in 2019 and 135,000 have been granted residency that year alone. Along with Romanians, Ukrainians, Britons and Chinese, Brazilians make up the majority of immigrants as suggested by the official data. We hope this move pushes other countries to extend the same hospitality to many stranded visitors and immigrants in other countries so that in this dark times, it is humanity that triumphs.
