The National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., is one of the most iconic springtime celebrations in the United States. It all began in 1912, when the mayor of Tokyo, Yukio Ozaki, gifted 3,000 cherry trees to the city of Washington, D.C., to symbolise the friendship between Japan and the USA. This kind gesture has since grown into an annual event that attracts over 7,00,000 tourists to the capital.
From March 20 to April 13, 2025, the festival honours the breathtaking beauty of the cherry trees as they blossom. The 2025 peak bloom is expected to take place from March 28 to March 31. The arrival of spring is marked by a stunning sight as the trees around the Tidal Basin blossom into a sea of pink and white.

A Spectacular Celebration Of Spring
The Yoshino cherry trees are the heart of the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. They were also the main trees included in the original 1912 gift. Visitors flock to the Tidal Basin to witness the blossoms in full glory. Taking in the breathtaking views of the Washington Monument and other landmarks, visitors can also choose to paddle boats or walk along the paths. Although the Yoshino cherry trees are the main attraction, you can also see the Kwanzan cherries. These trees bloom later and offer a second opportunity to enjoy the view.
If you’ve never been to the National Cherry Blossom Festival, 2025 is the year to go. The festival will be filled with culture and art celebrating both nations’ rich histories. This year will also highlight new artistic collaborations, along with the return of classic events like the Pink Tie Party Fundraiser and PetalPalooza.
