Watch: Under-Construction Flyover In Maharashtra’s Chiplun Falls, Base Snaps In Two

A video of an under-construction bridge crumbling into pieces recently went viral on social media. According to reports, this particular bridge was a part of the National Highway 66 or the Mumbai-Goa Highway. The section of the flyover that collapsed was located in Maharashtra’s Chiplun and the bridge is called Bahadur Shaikh Naka Bridge. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported in the incident. Here are all the details you need to know about this particular incident.

Under-Construction Flyover Falls In Maharashtra’s Chiplun

According to an article recently published by the Hindustan Times, the section that fell was the largest bridge in the Konkan region. The article also states that the cause of the collapse of the bridge was that the two girders in the middle snapped. The bridge was to have 46 pillars and work till the sixth pillar was completed.

However, it seems that the bridge was unable to take the load of the machinery. When it snapped and crumbled, the other machinery tumbled down along with it and incurred severe damages. No damage to humans or loss of human lives was reported, however. Only the machines placed on the bridge were damaged.

The video has been circulating on the micro-blogging website X (formerly known as Twitter) and shows vehicles around the bridge swiftly manoeuvring away from the falling bridge. A crowd quickly gathered and, after the crumbling, ran towards the bridge, probably to check if any humans were trapped or injured. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Part Of The Mumbai-Goa Highway On NH 66

The incident took place on October 16, Monday around 2:45 PM. The bridge was located in the Maharashtrian district of Ratnagiri. According to an article recently published by Livemint, this particular bridge developed cracks in the girder when it was being placed at an elevated position.

Following the collapse, the area was sealed and police personnel were deployed in the area. Since the traffic in the area was at the time operational, as is seen in the video itself, the work to remove the debris couldn’t begin right away. Many people on the Internet were understandably angered and disappointed by the situation.

Many even blamed corruption and the poor quality of materials used in public infrastructure projects. The Mumbai-Goa highway is four lanes wide and is a part of NH 66 which is 1,608 kilometres long. It connects the city of Panvel in Maharashtra to Cape Comorin in Tamil Nadu.

In addition to these two, it also passes through other Indian states like Goa, Karnataka and Kerala. Its Mumbai-Goa section passes through Chiplun in Ratnagiri.
