West Bengal: Lightning Claims 11 Lives In Malda District; Many Hospitalised Due To Injuries

A sudden storm and rain hit West Bengal on Thursday. These rain showers were accompanied by lightning strikes that killed 11 people in West Bengal’s Malda district. Two of the deceased were minors. The police confirmed the news and announced compensation for the families of the deceased.

11 Killed & Several Injured Due To Lightning Strikes In West Bengal

About 11 people lost their lives in West Bengal’s Malda district after being struck by lightning strikes in different parts of the district. Among the 11 deceased, two were minors. Several people were reported injured as well and were hospitalised immediately for medical assistance.

Confirming the deaths and injuries, a government official told PTI, “So far, 11 people have been killed due to lightning strikes. A number of injured people are being treated at various hospitals. Some of the injured are in critical condition.”

According to reports, the minors were residents of the Manikchak Police Station area and were students of classes 10 and 11. They were struck by lightning while returning from a mango orchard. Among the other deceased, a couple was killed by lightning strikes while working in the fields in Harishchandrapur. The police had arranged to bring the bodies of the deceased to the Malda Medical College for post-mortem examination.

District Administration Announces Compensation For The Deceased

West Bengal’s Malda district administration has announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh each for the families who lost their loved ones due to lightning. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her condolences to the bereaved family. She mentioned that the district administration is working “tirelessly to provide all necessary support to the affected” and doing everything in their “capacity to assist those in need.

We would like to extend our condolences to all the families who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident. We also hope for a speedy recovery of all the injured in this incident.
