Exciting times are just around the corner for West Bengal’s Bagdogra Airport! The airport is all set to undergo a major transformation with a brand-new terminal that will be 10 times bigger than the existing one. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has confirmed that the new terminal building will cover 70,400 square metres in its first phase. According to Financial Express reports, an additional 50,000 square metres are planned for the second phase. The existing airport will continue operations as usual while the construction is underway.

The project is expected to cost ₹1,560 crore in total, and tenders will be given out in two stages. One of them will be for the construction of the terminal and the other for the airside infrastructure, which includes runways, taxiways, etc., the Financial Express reported.

Located in Siliguri, Bagdogra Airport is a crucial hub for tourists heading to the Himalayas and the Northeast. However, the existing infrastructure struggles to handle the ever-growing passenger footfall. The new terminal aims to change that by enhancing capacity and making international and domestic flights more frequent.

On October 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project. It is set to be a part of a broader plan to improve aviation in India. As per the Financial Express reports, Darjeeling BJP MP Raju Bista shared that the new terminal will be 10 times bigger. He also shared that an initial development budget of ₹16 crore has already been set aside, with additional investments anticipated in the future.

For travellers, this new terminal will revolutionise the experience with more domestic and international flights, boosting connectivity. The spacious terminal will ease the congestion and ensure smoother passenger flow. This new project will also lead to economic growth, offering more business opportunities and job creation. With its strategic location and huge expansion, Bagdogra is poised to become one of India’s most important regional airports.
