The tradition of cake mixing is an age-old practice that kicks off the festive season. It marks the arrival of Christmas celebrations. Rooted in history and symbolic significance, cake mixing is a blend of heritage, camaraderie, and holiday joy. Let’s take a closer look at what this tradition entails, its origins, and its growing embrace in India.
The History And Significance Of Cake Mixing
Technically, cake mixing involves exactly what the name suggests. For this tradition, loved ones come together and combine a rich assortment of dried fruits, nuts, spices, and alcohol to form the perfect base for a Christmas fruit cake. Is there a more fun way to bake a cake? Definitely not! Typically, this mixture includes candied fruits, cashews, figs, raisins, prunes, pistachios, dried cherries, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and almonds.
Just when you think it can’t get any better, it does! Once the dry ingredients are mixed together, this festive blend is soaked in rum, brandy, wine, or a combination of fruit juices and alcohol.
The mixture is marinated for several days to make sure the alcohol infuses the ingredients, intensifying the flavours and creating a boozy base for the cake.
Originally a celebration of the harvest season, cake mixing has been a tradition since the 17th century. Given the abundance of fruit and nut harvests, families would get together to make a fruitcake to enjoy throughout the winter. This practice began in Europe and gradually spread across the world.
