Australia is set to launch an innovative work programme called the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professional Scheme or MATES in December 2024, targeting skilled young Indian professionals. This initiative emerges from the Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement or the MMPA signed between Australia and India in May 2023. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about this particular job programme for young Indians.
What Is MATES, Australia’s New Job Programme For Young Indians
According to an article which was recently published by News18, the programme offers a unique opportunity for recent Indian graduates to work in Australia for up to two years without requiring employer sponsorship. MATES will initially operate as a pilot scheme, allocating 3,000 places annually for primary applicants.
Eligibility Criteria:
– Age: 30 years or younger
– Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher (graduated within two years)
– English Proficiency: IELTS score of 6 overall (minimum 5 in each component)
– Specialisation in key sectors: renewable energy, mining, engineering, ICT, artificial intelligence, or financial technology
Notable Features:
– Multiple entry visa valid for 24 months from first entry
– 12-month window for initial entry into Australia
– Provision for dependents (spouse and children) with full work rights
– Dependents exempt from the annual cap
– Option to apply for other temporary or permanent visas whilst in Australia
– Freedom to work in any sector, regardless of qualification
How Will The Scheme Impact Job Prospects For Indians?
The scheme aims to facilitate knowledge exchange between the two nations whilst addressing skills shortages in Australia’s priority sectors. Participants can travel freely during their visa period, though time spent outside Australia doesn’t extend the visa duration.
Applicants must cover various costs, including visa fees and English language testing. The programme prohibits multiple participations by the same individual. Additional fees may apply for including dependent family members.
The first ballot for MATES visa applications opens in December 2024, marking a significant step in strengthening Australia-India bilateral relations through skilled migration.
