Editor-in-Chief of Curly Tales, Kamiya Jani, recently gushed about the Spanish dishes that she indulged in during her recent visit to Spain. Eating everything from paella to patatas bravas, she couldn’t possibly choose a favourite though! Let’s look at the top five Spanish dishes recommended by Kamiya Jani.
5 Must-Try Spanish Dishes Recommended By Kamiya Jani
1. Paella: Desi Pulao With A Spanish Touch
Paella, Spain’s most popular dish, is a native of Valencia. This colourful rice dish bears some resemblance to Indian pulao due to the intensity of flavours and pungency of spices. Traditionally prepared with saffron-scented rice, it includes a combination of proteins such as chicken, rabbit, or seafood along with assorted vegetables. Like our desi pulao, paella tastes better when eaten among family and friends.
2. Patatas Bravas: Desi Aloo Chaat
If you’re fond of crunchy, spicy spuds, patatas bravas is going to feel like home! A quintessential Spanish tapas fare made of deep-fried cubed potatoes that get smothered in spicy tomato-based ‘salsa brava’, somewhat like our delectable aloo chaat. In other areas of Spain, they place a dollop of aioli on top, an aioli-made garlic mayonnaise, adding the extra punch of flavour. Kamiya simply could not have enough of Spanish-style crispy spuds!
3. Epinacas With Garbanzos: Palak Chole, But Spanish Style!
A southern Spanish dish, epinacas con garbanzos is a nutritious mix of chickpeas and spinach, akin to our North Indian palak chole. The hearty dish is full of earthy flavours and is traditionally served with bread. If you enjoy the warmth of spices, you’re bound to enjoy the Spanish version of this popular dish.

4. Pimiento De Padrón: The Spanish Bhajiya
In Spain, these tiny green peppers are deep-fried in olive oil and salted, and this is a beloved tapas. Pimiento De Padron resembles our mirchi bhajiya but with a less hot punch. Like our street-style pakoras, these peppers are such a tasty and addictive snack!
5. Churros Con Chocolate: Dish As Comforting As Gulab Jamun
No meal is complete without dessert! Churros con chocolate, Spain’s favourite sweet dessert, is the ideal finish to a meal. These sugar- and cinnamon-dusted fried dough sticks are accompanied by thick, warm chocolate to dip them into. Just as we adore our gulab jamun, Spaniards relish their churros as a comforting and decadent dessert. Kamiya enjoyed a sweet finish to her culinary adventure!
Kamiya’s Spanish culinary journey was a veritable feast! Her experience puts us in mind how cuisine brings together cultures. Although these dishes might have varied origins, their flavour and ingredients give them a familiar feel.
