Ten years ago, Skopje underwent an extensive makeover spearheaded by the then-ruling VMRO-DPMNE party under Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski. The vision was to establish a distinctive national identity by constructing a series of grandiose structures and statues, some modelled after famous landmarks across Europe. You’ll find buildings resembling the White House, the Pantheon, and even the Arc de Triomphe within a short stroll of each other.
The centrepiece of this transformation was Macedonia Square, dominated by an imposing statue of Alexander the Great. The goal of these recent additions was to inspire pride and awe at the past. The project was not without controversy, though.
Responses to the renovation have been divided. For some, the redesign represents a major step towards reaffirming Macedonia’s identity and independence. Some, though, believe it is a frivolous expense that diverts attention from more important problems.
Now, the grandeur of the redesign is beginning to fade. A large number of the statues are falling apart, and some have been painted over in protest of the expensive repairs. However, beneath this surface of conflict, Skopje provides a distinctive combination of experiences.

Its relatively low visitor numbers mean you can explore without the throngs of tourists.
