You Cannot Shoot Videos Or Reels Around 50m Radius Of The Temples On The Char Dham Yatra

The Uttarakhand government has announced a new regulation for the ongoing Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage. In an effort to preserve the sanctity of the holy sites and ensure a smooth experience for all devotees, pilgrims will be prohibited from shooting videos or creating social media reels within a 50-metre radius of the temple premises. This decision comes after a surge in visitor numbers and concerns raised about the disruptive nature of videography for pilgrims seeking a spiritual experience.

The Char Dham Yatra, a revered Hindu pilgrimage encompassing four Himalayan shrines – Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath – attracts millions of devotees each year. However, recent years have seen an increase in pilgrims using their phones to capture videos and reels for social media, sometimes at the expense of respectful behaviour and a focused spiritual experience.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, in response to concerns raised, has implemented a ban on videography and creating social media reels within 50 metres of the temple premises. This multi-pronged approach aims to preserve the sanctity of these holy sites.

The constant focus on capturing the perfect video can detract from the spiritual essence of the pilgrimage for many devotees.  Furthermore, large crowds forming around those filming can create bottlenecks and hinder the smooth flow of pilgrims, especially during peak seasons. Finally, the ban ensures a more respectful and inclusive environment for all visitors. Not everyone on the Yatra desires to be filmed, and this regulation protects their right to a peaceful pilgrimage experience.

It’s important to clarify that this regulation doesn’t restrict pilgrims from carrying their mobile phones. Authorities permit visitors to click personal photos for memories. The focus is on curbing disruptive behaviour and ensuring a more serene pilgrimage experience.

This decision has received mixed reactions. While some pilgrims welcome the focus on piety, others express concerns about the practicality of enforcement. The authorities have assured that temple staff and volunteers will be present to politely inform visitors about the regulation.
