From June 1st, Abu Dhabi Will Ban The Use Of Single-Use Styrofoam Products

Abu Dhabi is gearing up for another monumental change as it prepares to ban single-use styrofoam products, following its earlier ban on single-use plastic. Effective from June 1st, this new regulation aims to tackle environmental concerns head-on by targeting various styrofoam items, including cups, lids, plates, and beverage containers, along with their caps and lids, all made of expanded polystyrene.

The Ban on Styrofoam In Abu Dhabi: What You Need to Know

This ban extends to food container receptacles intended for immediate consumption, whether on-site or for takeaway, as well as containers for products typically consumed directly from the receptacle without further preparation, such as cooking or heating. However, certain products like large storage boxes, coolers, and trays used for storing meat, fruit, dairy products, and other retail food items are exempt from the ban.

This proactive measure is expected to significantly reduce litter in Abu Dhabi’s environment. Styrofoam, in particular, poses a serious threat as it easily breaks down into microplastics, which can infiltrate the food chain, posing risks to human health and biodiversity. To ensure widespread awareness and compliance, the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) has circulated the ban’s circular to over 50,000 commercial establishments and 80 plastic manufacturing facilities.

In collaboration with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), ADDED has also launched an extensive awareness programme. This initiative aims to educate both commercial and industrial establishments about the ban’s implications and the specific styrofoam products targeted. Additionally, ADDED plans to conduct rigorous field inspection campaigns across sales outlets and industrial facilities to enforce the ban effectively, commencing from June 1st, 2024.
