Kalavantin Durg is known to be the world’s most dangerous fortress and a trek here will definitely scare you to death.

What Is It?

Located between Matheran and Panvel in Maharashtra, it stands tall at an elevation of 2,300 feet. It is only 50 km away from Mumbai which makes for a good long drive on a weekend.

The trek here requires absolute strength, patience, and stamina to reach the top. The Fort is also known as Prabalgad Fort, it has steep slopes, a staircase with no ropes or railings to support your climb which makes it the most dangerous trek.

What’s In It?

To get to this fortress can be quite challenging but, the view from the top is worth all the risk. The edgy slope and rock-cut steps will give you a thrilling experience. Although, its all worth it once you reach the top as you’ll be greeted with breathtaking panoramic views and a temple.

The trek starts from Thakurwadi village, which can be reached via a train from Mumbai to Panvel followed by a bus journey. You can choose to do this trek all by yourself or opt to go with a travel company who will organize the trek for you along with an overnight camping at the fortress with bonfire which will cost you over ₹1000.

October to March is the best time to visit the Fort as the weather is pleasant. Trekking during the monsoons can be avoided as the stairs become slippery increasing the danger.
