Taste of Raj is a restaurant and takeaway nestled in Blackheath, London. The UK-based restaurant has been serving Londoners a staple of Indian curries, breads, biryani, thalis, kebabs and appetisers for the past 20 years. However, the restaurant is seriously in the news for all the wrong reasons. Its owner, Ikbal Hussain was caught by the immigration enforcement officials for hiring three illegal workers from Bangladesh. The restaurant was raided in March 2020 when this came to light.

A report by The Siasat Daily states that the employees worked at Taste of Raj between four days and up to two months. Ikbal Hussain hired these illegal workers without conducting right-to-work checks. The restaurateur also failed to keep proper documentation that proved their eligibility to work in the UK. Kevin Read, Chief Investigator at the Insolvency Service stated to media agencies that Ikbal Hussain failed to ensure the required checks needed to be carried out while employing the three illegal workers. These checks are in contravention of the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006.

Kevin Read called this a serious breach of legislation. Up till 2031, Ikbal Hussain is banned from any kind of involvement, formation or promotion in the management of a company in the UK. This ban came into effect from February 16, 2024 onwards. Suran Padiachie from Home Office Immigration Enforcement stated that illegal employment robs honest employees from work. It puts vulnerable people at risk and defraud the public purse. The official stated that they are clamping down on illegal employment by tripling fines and ramping up enforcement activity.
