Going the green way, Selvamma in Bengaluru uses a solar powered fan to roast corn for all her customers. Making headlines for her unique way, she is popularly known as Solar-Amma! Selvamma has set up a stall at Vidhana Soudha building in Bengaluru and she has received the solar fan as a gift from Bangalore based NGO called SELCO Foundation.

Although, solar fans have been installed only in Jan 2019, Selvamma has been selling corn since 20 years! Someone from the NGO had been visiting her stall for quite some time and suddenly thought why not gift her with a solar device. This will not only reduce the manual work of using a cane fan regularly but will also reduce coal consumption and will also reduce that dust generated from that coal consumption. Not just reducing work, the solar fan also reduces roasting time. So basically, it’s a win-win!

We at Curly Tales recently visited the famous Solar-Amma to find out more about what she does. We were awed to see the collaboration between SELCO and Selvamma. It’s a modern-day approach to prepare a traditional dish that we have been enjoying for years now.
