The public eating space found in Iran was among the ancient Lagesh ruins, which was an important centre for Sumerian civilisation. Moreover, the place was filled with benches, an oven and a clay refrigerator called ‘zeer’. There were also some bowls with leftover food and other vessels. There were bones of animals and fish in some bowls, following the widespread Sumerian tradition of drinking beer.

These items provide an insight into the life of urban dwellers almost 5000 years ago. According to the researchers, the ruin was probably a place where people used to come and eat. However, it is not a domestic setting but a tavern, as there is beer-drinking evidence.

Lagash Ruins In Iran

The city of Lagash, presently known as Telloh, was one of the most important cities for Sumerian civilisation. Located between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, this place is one of the largest archaeological sites in Iran. Many excavation projects are being carried out here. And it was discovered that the city was developed on four marsh islands. During Sumerian civilisation, the region was divided into city-states. Each one of them was walled in and worshipped their deity. Though the political power belonged to the citizens, due to the constant rivalry between these city-states, they adopted the institution of kingship.

These discoveries were possible due to the joint efforts of teams from the University of Pisa and the University of Pennsylvania. They used modern technologies like thermal imaging, micro-stratigraphic sampling, drone photography and magnetometry.
