A Proposed UNESCO Heritage Site, Karnataka’s Lakkundi Is A Hidden Gem; 3 Things To Do There

As you explore the temples, marvel at the step wells, and engage with the locals, you’ll find yourself captivated by the timeless charm of Lakkundi in Karnataka. Now, the State Department of Archaeology Museums and Heritage (DAMH) has also recommended the monuments at Lakkundi for inclusion on the provisional list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The place promises an immersive experience that combines history, architecture, and spirituality.

Historical Tapestry: A Glimpse Into The Past

Lakkundi, also known as Lokkugundi, was a significant metropolis before the 14th century. It is currently a village in Karnataka’s Gadag District. By the 10th century, it had become an important economic and commercial centre for South India. There were mint operations documented in Kannada and Sanskrit inscriptions and manuscripts. As you stroll through the narrow lanes of Lakkundi, you’ll find yourself surrounded by ancient structures that whisper tales of a bygone era.

British archaeologists of the nineteenth century were instrumental in unearthing Lakkundi and its relevance in Indian art history. The Lakkundi ruins are now used to showcase the history of Indian art in museums, with some ruins on display in a local sculpture gallery (museum) and sheds near the temples.

The State government established the Lakkundi Heritage Area Protection Authority to ensure its preservation. It is located between Hampi and Goa, around 12 kilometres from the twin towns of Gadag-Betageri.

Lakkundi is renowned for its step wells, locally known as “Kalyani.” These wells served as vital water sources. They were also places for communal gatherings and rituals. The intricate architecture of the step wells reflects the ingenuity of ancient engineers and artisans. The stepped wells stood as testaments to the artistic finesse of the craftsmen who sculpted them. Exploring these step wells is like embarking on a journey through time. Each step tells a story of a civilisation that valued both functionality and aesthetics.

The Brahma Kundha at Manikesvara temple is a prime example. It features a symmetrically designed well with ornate carvings on the steps.
