Aarey Forest Recorded Over 25 Flaming Fires Since January; Huge Cause Of Concern

A couple of years ago, environmentalists fought tooth and nail to save Aarey Forest in Mumbai which was to be utilised Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation. And while they could save Aarey from demolition then, the forest is under threat again and this time due to forest fires. Aarey Colony has seen 27 forest fires this year and the data is extremely alarming. According to reports, between 27 of the 48 fires in Mumbai and suburbs have been reported from Aarey.

Another seven forest fires were reported in the vicinity of Film City, whose green cover is contiguous with that of Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Aarey(SGNP). Increase In Movement Of People Possible Cause Of Forest Fire

But what could be the possible reason for fire in Aarey? While proper fire management strategy is in place, this could be because of the increase in the number of people. Sometimes a burning cigarette can also lead to a forest fire. Aarey Needs Dedicated Fire Stations

There have been several instances where smaller fires have been put out by residents and volunteers. But there needs to be a dedicated investigation to find whether these fires are arson or not. Aarey needs dedicated fire stations within the forest to curb the damage.

While most fires are doused within hours, the increase in the frequency of these forest fires has left many local citizens and environmentalists concerned.
