The annual Amarnath Yatra in Kashmir commenced on June 29, drawing thousands of devotees to the revered cave shrine nestled at a staggering 3,880 meters. Over 13,000 pilgrims embarked on the sacred journey on the opening day, braving rainy conditions in Jammu and undertaking stringent security measures.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated the pilgrimage, with a total of 13,103 pilgrims setting off from the Jammu base camp towards the Valley. The yatra will continue for 52 days, culminating on August 19.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his greetings to the pilgrims, acknowledging the spiritual significance of the Amarnath Yatra and its power to invigorate devotees of Lord Shiva. Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed this sentiment, emphasising the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a safe and seamless pilgrimage. He highlighted the yatra’s importance in India’s rich cultural tapestry.

Routes And Security Arrangements

The pilgrimage follows two distinct routes: the traditional 48-kilometer Nunwan-Pahalgam route and the shorter, albeit steeper, 14-kilometer Baltal route. On the opening day, a total of 13,736 individuals, including women, children, and security personnel, embarked on their spiritual journey towards the holy cave.

Extensive security arrangements have been implemented to ensure the safety of pilgrims. Additionally, ONGC has deployed medical support at crucial points along the routes to cater to the needs of the devotees.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah took to social media to express his reverence for the yatra. “Shri Amarnath Yatra is an eternal symbol of India’s enduring traditions and cultural continuity,” he wrote. He wished all devotees a successful pilgrimage and a fulfilling darshan.
