A storm has erupted in the realm of international relations, marked by a contentious exchange between Maldivian politician Zahid Rameez and Minister Mariyam Shiuna, who made inflammatory remarks targeting Indians, alongside a scornful jab at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promotion of Lakshadweep as a tourist destination. Their divisive comments have sparked widespread condemnation and triggered the hashtag Boycott Maldives to trend ferociously across social media platforms.
‘Boycott Maldives’ Turns Into A Trend On Social Media

The controversy stems from a series of derogatory statements from Maldivian leaders disparaging India and ridiculing Prime Minister Modi’s efforts to promote Lakshadweep as a tourist hotspot. This led to an outcry among Indian netizens, prompting a call for boycotting travel plans to the island nation.
In response, notable Indian personalities and celebrities swiftly took to social media to counter these sentiments. Bollywood luminaries such as John Abraham and Akshay Kumar passionately advocated for Indian tourism, emphasising the warmth of Indian hospitality and the diverse marine life in Lakshadweep. John Abraham, in particular, recommended visiting the picturesque Lakshadweep islands, extolling their beauty and the ethos of “Atithi Devo Bhava” (the guest is equivalent to God).

Came across comments from prominent public figures from Maldives passing hateful and racist comments on Indians. Surprised that they are doing this to a country that sends them the maximum number of tourists.
