This Raksha Bandhan, maybe skip the predictable shirt, perfume or the voucher. Take your sibling somewhere instead. This year, Raksha Bandhan falls on Friday, August 28, which means the festival conveniently arrives with a three-day weekend for those who have Saturday and Sunday off. And no, this does not have to become one of those painfully wholesome “siblings who travel together, stay together” holidays. Pick a Raksha Bandhan destination where you can eat too much, get lost, argue over navigation, take terrible pictures and come back with at least three stories that your family has not heard 700 times already.

7 Best Places To Travel With Your Sibling This Raksha Bandhan 2026

1. Get Completely Drenched In Meghalaya

Meghalaya is what happens when nature decides subtlety is overrated. There are waterfalls crashing through forests, clouds sitting practically on the hills and trails that eventually lead you to living root bridges that look like something from a fantasy film. Base yourselves around Shillong and Sohra, then spend the trip exploring waterfalls, caves and the famous living root bridges around Nongriat. The monsoon makes the landscape particularly dramatic, although heavy rain can affect trekking conditions, so check local conditions before setting out.

This is also the sort of trip where sibling dynamics become very obvious very quickly. One of you will insist on taking the “shorter” trail. The other will discover that the shorter trail involves approximately 4,000 stairs. Five minutes later, the blame game begins.

2. Turn Lucknow Into One Giant Food Crawl

If your sibling relationship is primarily held together by food, do not fight it. Lean in!

Go to Lucknow and build the entire weekend around eating. Start with Awadhi classics, make your way through kebabs and biryani, stop for chaat and finish with something sweet. Between meals, wander through the old city, visit Bara Imambara and explore Lucknow’s famously intricate Chikankari shopping scene.

The trick is not to create an itinerary so ambitious that you spend the entire day travelling between tourist attractions.

3. Do A Coffee, Clouds And Waterfalls Weekend In Coorg

Coorg in the monsoon is basically an excuse to romanticise getting stuck in the rain!

Karnataka Tourism describes the region as a landscape of coffee plantations, forests, waterfalls and misty hills, and there is plenty to do around Madikeri. Abbey Falls is surrounded by coffee and spice plantations, while Raja’s Seat offers sweeping sunset views. You can also visit coffee estates and learn how the beans are cultivated and processed.

4. Go Underwater In The Andamans

Some siblings bond over Netflix. Some siblings bond over gossip. And then some siblings decide that the logical way to celebrate Raksha Bandhan is by jumping into the sea with several kilograms of scuba equipment strapped to them.

If you are the third kind, head to the Andaman Islands. Base yourselves around Swaraj Dweep, spend time at Radhanagar Beach and book a beginner-friendly diving or snorkelling experience through an authorised operator. The Andaman & Nicobar Tourism Department lists scuba-diving experiences and authorised diving operators in Swaraj Dweep, with the island’s marine biodiversity being one of its major attractions.

There is something particularly memorable about seeing your sibling underwater for the first time. No one can complain about your music taste, steal your food or ask you to send them money when both of you are busy staring at coral and marine life.

5. Get Lost Among The Ruins Of Hampi

Hampi is for siblings who cannot agree on anything but somehow always agree that getting lost is a good idea. The former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire spreads across an extraordinary landscape of ancient temples, ruins and enormous granite boulders. Instead of rushing from monument to monument, rent bicycles, explore the ruins at your own pace and find a good spot for sunset.

The Vijaya Vittala Temple, Virupaksha Temple and the sprawling royal complex give you plenty to explore, but Hampi’s real charm lies in the landscape between them.

6. Take The Toy Train To Ooty

There are certain childhood arguments that we don’t need to explain.

Who got the window seat? Who ate the last packet of chips? Who got the bigger piece of cake?

Take the Nilgiri Mountain Railway to Ooty and settle the window-seat argument all over again.

The railway is part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India and climbs through the Nilgiris on a historic route towards Udagamandalam, better known as Ooty. Its distinctive rack-and-pinion system helps the train tackle the steep gradients of the mountain route. The point here is not simply reaching Ooty. The journey is the holiday. Sit by the window, watch the landscape change, argue over who gets the better photographs and pretend you are not secretly enjoying the nostalgia.

7. Pick An Adventure That Scares Both Of You In Rishikesh

Rishikesh is an excellent destination for siblings because it gives competitive people something extremely useful: activities they can compete over.

Who will go first? Who will chicken out? Who screamed louder?

There is rafting, trekking, bungee jumping, kayaking and plenty of opportunities to spend the entire journey daring each other to do something questionable.

If you are travelling specifically over the August 28 weekend, do not build the trip around rafting without checking whether activities are operating.

Instead, make the weekend about the wider Rishikesh experience. Explore the town, walk along the Ganga, try adventure activities that are operating, spend an evening at the ghats and find a café where you can spend two hours dissecting everyone’s family drama.

You can fight in the car, steal each other’s food, make fun of each other’s photographs and still somehow end the night talking until 2 AM. Sometimes, three days away with the person who has known you since your embarrassing childhood haircut is the best present this Raksha Bandhan.
