Ashneer Grover Believes That Travel Is Discretionary And No Loans Should Be Provided For It

Ashneer Grover joined our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, for an incredibly intellectual episode of the Sunday Brunch. He was the co-founder of BharatPe, a judge on Shark Tank India and the author of the book, Doglapan: The Hard Truth about Life and Start-Ups, released last December. Today we will talk about how he believes travelling doesn’t require a loan because it is discretionary.

Ashneer Grover Said There Should Be No Loans For Travelling As Its Discretionary

We played a fun game with Ashneer Grover where he was supposed to rate situations based on the term ‘Doglapan’. This word was popularised by him on the Shark Tank Season 1. The situations given by Kamiya were to be rated out of 10 based on its Doglapan. One of them was to travel by taking a loan and he replied that it was an extremely bad thing to do. He then nicely explained the reason behind it. He said, “I think you should be debt-free after a certain age.”

Ashneer Grover continued that he does not owe anyone or any firm any kind of money and that currently, he is debt-free. He shared that being debt-free brings a sense of freedom and success. That is absolutely right, you are your leader and no one has any power to own you. He also gave us a piece of advice that you should never take a loan for anything in the world that is discretionary, meaning optional, especially for travel.

We met him at his residential place, The Camellia in Sector 42, Gurgaon. Kamiya went on to ask what is it about The Camellia that every startup founder has got a place in this residential complex. Ashneer Grover gave us a very simple reply, “Startup founder ke paise bach gaye hai,” and chuckled a little. (Startup founder saved their money.)

He shared that in 2021 these startup founders sold a lot of their shares to investors. Also to save a lot of tax, you have to buy residential property. He informed us that there is no such place in Delhi where you could buy such a big residential property with white money. Thus The Camellia came to save taxes for them. So that is the reason that a bunch of startup owners have settled there. Are you thinking of buying a place in this complex?
