Assam Lights World’s Biggest Diya This Diwali

The Festival Of Lights is past us and we have to wait an entire year for it to be back. That does not mean that we can’t still revel in the spirit of it. If there’s any country that goes over the top with their festivities, it’s India. Right from creating human pyramids to break pots that are high up in the air to playing around with colours. You can always bank on Indians to go overboard during the festival time. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that the state of Assam took it upon themselves to set a world record this Diwali. They have officially set a record for lighting the biggest diya in the world.

Assam Diya

What’s So Special?

For the first time ever, Guwahati lit the world’s biggest diya. The earthern diya has dimensions 8 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height. And that’s not all for the diya can hold up to 200 litres of oil. Can you imagine how many chips you could fry in that much oil? The answer to that is, a lot! The diya has been sponsored by Max Cement and the idea behind this was to create awareness about greener alternatives. The cement giant also wanted to address the issue of single-use plastic and it’s consequences on the environment.

The diya was lit on Saturday at Digholi Pukhuri in Guwahati. But the diya is not the first of its kind. The earlier record was held by Gorakhpur’s Surajkund Dham Samiti and Laxmi Pooja Navyuvak who had lit a diya weighing 150 kilograms and could store up to 101 litres of oil in it. The Assamese diya is supposed to make its way into the Limca Book of World Records.

The diya lighting ceremony was attended by celebrities, social activists spiritual leaders and more. The lamp is supposed to burn until the 31st of October.
