According to an article which was recently published by The Times Of India or TOI, this scheme is being undertaken to ensure the safety and security of the increasing number of tourists that visit the state.

The details about the tourist police stations, establishing units, and other infrastructure facilities necessary to ensure tourist safety are mentioned in the New Assam Tourism Bill. This bill was recently passed by the state assembly.

The Tourist Police Scheme was first introduced in the year 2022. The Union Ministry of Tourism passed a directive under which all states had to have dedicated tourist police units.

In a collaborative effort by the Bureau Of Police Research and Development or BPR&D and the Ministry of Home Affairs, training programmes and standard operating procedures of the personnel will be developed.
