In Abu Dhabi, Diwali’s sparkle and spirit took on a new dimension at the BAPS Hindu Mandir, the first Hindu temple in the UAE. Nestled in Abu Mureikha, the temple hosted its first Diwali celebration since opening earlier this year, bringing together UAE residents in a cultural celebration like no other. The vibrant festival didn’t just highlight traditional Indian customs; it also showcased the UAE’s commitment to unity and inclusion.
Diwali Decor And A Sweet Twist At Abu Dhabi’s BAPS Hindu Mandir
Diwali, the beloved festival of lights symbolising good triumphing over evil, transformed the BAPS Hindu Mandir into a scene of radiance. The temple glowed with oil lamps and candles, while rangoli designs, added an extra dash of festive flair, symbolising positivity and good fortune. The air was filled with the warmth of community and tradition, capturing the spirit of Diwali for all to enjoy.
Pranav Desai, director of the temple, shared a delightful twist for visitors. Instead of the usual prasad of khichdi (a traditional rice and lentil dish), guests received ladudi, a sweet made from gram flour. “Today’s special offering symbolises sweetness and celebration,” Mr. Desai noted. This thoughtful change added an extra layer of festivity, making the temple’s first Diwali memorable for everyone who visited.
Annakut Extravaganza: A Feast Of New Beginnings
Following Diwali, the temple marked Annakut, also known as Govardhan Puja, to usher in the Hindu New Year. This festival centres on gratitude and abundance, and at the BAPS Hindu Mandir, volunteers worked tirelessly to prepare thousands of vegetarian dishes. The temple welcomed devotees, including many blue-collar workers from nearby areas, with meals lovingly prepared by a large team of volunteers.
The Annakut celebrations brought together hundreds of people from diverse backgrounds, creating a harmonious blend of flavours, community, and shared traditions. The atmosphere was festive and heartfelt, embodying the essence of Annakut.
UAE’s Inclusive Spirit On Display
The Diwali and Annakut celebrations at the temple also reflected the UAE’s openness to cultural diversity. President Sheikh Mohamed and Vice President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid extended Diwali greetings to the Indian community, reinforcing this inclusivity. President Sheikh Mohamed’s message wished peace, health, and happiness to families across the UAE, while Vice President Sheikh Mohammed’s heartfelt wishes called for harmony and compassion.
The celebrations at the BAPS Hindu Mandir, alongside those at Jebel Ali Hindu Temple, where 20,000 visitors flocked daily, truly showcased the UAE’s inclusive spirit, making everyone feel welcome and valued.
