BBMP Installs Large Mirrors On Walls In Bangalore To Prevent Public Urination

Mirror Mirror on the wall, who is the most shameful of all? Well, the mirror won’t be answering this one, but the reflection of the man tinkling will. From vibrantly painted walls to idols of deities placed near walls, Bangalore has done it all to put an end to public urination. Alas! Nothing seemed to help. That’s when Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) stepped in to hold a mirror literally and figuratively to people who urinate in public. Large mirrors are installed at spots by the Bengaluru civic body wherever public urination is usually reported.

What’s In It?

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has put up huge mirrors around 8 feet by 4 feet in size at five different locations around the Garden City. Officials have stated that this concept has been adopted as a part of the Swachh Survekshan 2020 campaign. Authorities hope that this concept will help to create awareness and discourage public urination. These mirrors have been installed at Indiranagar near ESI Hospital, Church Street, Indian Express circle in Queens road, KR Market and near Jyoti Nivas College in Koramangala.

BBMP Special Commissioner, Solid Waste Management, Randeep D stated to a reputed news agency that the concept of installing mirrors in the blackspots is to give civic sense and prevent public urination in the city. He further added that five mirrors in five different locations have been installed after conducting a survey.

What’s More?

The mirrors installed by BBMP to discourage public urination cost around ₹30,000. And it can be moved to any spot wherever there is a need for awareness. Interestingly, the mirrors also have a QR code that can be scanned to locate the nearest public toilet. Randeep D also added that Bengaluru is Open Defecation Free (ODF) and awareness is created through this project to prevent public urination and make sure this tag remains intact. In a country where women are shunned for wearing ‘certain’ kind of clothes or a couple are reprimanded for indulging in an intimate moment in public, its quite surprising that people seem to consider public urination total normalcy. The stench, stains and splatters on walls are just not given a thought at all. Did you know Bangalore Is India’s Top Ranked City In The Global Prosperity Index?

Bangalore authorities often approach with an out of the box thought. Whether its installing mannequins dressed like traffic police or the recent installation of mirrors on the walls, there seems to be a unique yet thought-provoking approach. The BBMP has also written messages on the mirrors about banning single-use plastic, not spitting in public and even advising citizens to use dustbins. Well, kudos to the authorities in Bangalore for this! We hope the reflection staring back at public urinators will definitely dissuade them from answering nature’s call in public.
