If you’re applying for a passport, then your wait time might depend more on where you live than you think! From lightning-fast processing in some cities to weeks-long waits in others, passport issuance timelines vary widely across India. So, yes, your pincode plays a big role in how quickly you get that much-anticipated booklet in hand, and here’s what data says.
Fastest & Slowest Places For Passport Issuance In India
According to The Times of India, the average passport issuance time under the normal category in 2025 ranged from four to five days to 40! As per the data shared by the ministry of external affairs, the passport issuance time in Goa takes four to five working days. Meanwhile, it takes up to 40 days for residents to get a passport in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur.
However, it is to be noted that disparities persist across regional passport offices and nothing is uniform across a state. While in Karnataka, Bengaluru RPO takes 15 days to issue a passport, it only takes five days for RPOs in Cochin and Kozhikode to issue an Indian passport.
Coming to Tamil Nadu, it takes Chennai an average 11 and Coimbatore about 20 days to issue a passport. As for Maharashtra, Mumbai takes about 10 days to issue a passport, Pune around 12, while Nagpur can take as long as 22 working days.

Tatkal Service Remains Prompt
In Bhubaneswar, Odisha, passport issuance can take up to 32 days, which is actually an improvement over the 40-day average recorded in 2024. As for Tatkal services, which are meant to be faster, passports are typically issued within one to six working days across India. However, the timeline still varies by city: in Raipur, even Tatkal applications can take up to 14 days, while in states like Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, passports are issued within just one to four days.
