Every Mumbaikar knows that the Mahalaxmi Racecourse is one of the largest open-air spaces in a city where space is scarce. However, the space has always been relatively inaccessible to the masses. The land parcel which stretches across 211 acres is owned jointly by the Government of Maharashtra and the BMC. It was leased out to the Royal Western Indian Turf Club or the RWITC. The BMC has proposed building a theme park on part of the land.

After a voting session which went on for two days, the members of the club gave a nod to the proposal. According to an article which was recently published by The Indian Express, out of the 708 members of the club, 540 voted in support of the move and 168 voted against it.

Out of the 211 acres of the land, 91 acres will be retained by the club and the rest of the 120 acres will be acquired by the authorities.

The land has been leased out to the RWITC since 1914. The latest lease expired more than a decade ago in 2013. The authorities, this time, suggested that the lease would be renewed only after a significant portion of the land was acquired by authorities solely.

The helipad, grandstand and race tracks, as per The Indian Express article, will all stay with the RWITC while the jogging tracks, some stables, and the parking area will be owned by the authorities.
