Bananas are one of the most loved and highly consumed fruits in the world. It is one of those rare foods that mothers happily feed their young kids because of its high nutritional value. However, there are also many myths and misconceptions about this fruit and one of the biggest ones is that bananas cause colds and coughs. But how true is this claim? Let’s find out!

We have all, at least once in our lives, been told that bananas cause colds and coughs. So, nutritionist Amita Gadre took to Instagram to weigh in on this myth that has been around for ages! She explains that colds and coughs are caused by the virus in the air and not by what you eat. She then went on to explain that bananas are a rich source of potassium, magnesium, and fibre – all essential nutrients that are actually good for you.

Bananas are also excellent for aiding digestion and boosting energy. So, where does the rumpus come from? Amita Gadre explains that while bananas don’t cause colds and coughs, they might aggravate it. She says that if you’re already sick, then bananas may increase mucus production a bit, especially if you have a cold. However, she maintains that bananas aren’t the cause of these issues.

She then explains that people with allergies or asthma can experience mild reactions to bananas. This is only when you consume cold or overripe bananas. However, this is also a rare occurrence.
