Umaid Bhawan Palace Has A Secret Behind Its Mirror & Another Hidden Inside Its Stone Walls

At Umaid Bhawan Palace, even the mirrors have secrets. During Curly Tales’ exclusive tour of the royal residence in Jodhpur, home to one of India’s wealthiest royal families and a sprawling empire estimated to be worth nearly ₹22,000 crore, there was one moment that completely changed the vibe of the tour. 

Umaid Bhawan Palace Has A Hidden Bar Disguised As A Mirror

It happened inside the Maharaja Durbar, a space already grand enough to make anyone stop mid-sentence. Massive chandeliers hung overhead, vintage detailing covered the walls, and right in the middle stood what looked like an oversized antique mirror.

Except it was never really a mirror! The panel opened to reveal a hidden bar tucked behind it. Not a tiny cabinet with a few bottles stacked inside, but an entire concealed space that looked straight out of an old royal gathering. The room carries that unmistakable old-money charm; it has polished wood, deep-toned interiors, classic glassware, and shelves lined with premium liquor. 

If modern speakeasy bars are designed to feel exclusive, this was the original version of it. Except this one belonged to royalty long before “hidden bars” became a trend people discovered through Instagram reels.

Umaid Bhawan Palace’s Cooling Technique Are Going Viral

Because while the hidden bar grabs eyeballs almost too quickly, the palace’s construction story is equally unbelievable. Unlike most massive structures of its time, Umaid Bhawan Palace was not built using cement. Instead, the palace was constructed using a sandstone known for handling heat exceptionally well. Before the material was approved, samples of the stone were reportedly sent to London for testing.

The engineering behind it becomes even more impressive once you learn how the stones were assembled. Rather than being fixed together with cement, the stones were designed to interlock with each other. That technique created tiny gaps within the structure, allowing air to circulate naturally through the palace. In Rajasthan’s brutal summer heat, the building managed to stay cooler without depending on modern cooling systems! 

So while today’s luxury homes boast central air conditioning and climate-control technology, Umaid Bhawan Palace had already figured out passive cooling decades ago through architecture alone.

Umaid Bhawan Palace does not just look luxurious; it behaves like a palace built far ahead of its time.
