Read on to learn more about this day, its significance, and its origin.
Date & History Of Constitution Day Of India
Our Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, and we celebrate the day as Republic Day each year. Since 2015, India has been observing another day to celebrate the important document, and that’s November 26. Back in 1949, the final draft of the Constitution was adopted on this day, and it is now celebrated as Constitution Day or the Samvidhan Divas of India.
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, under the Government of India, declared November 26 as Constitution Day to promote constitutional values among the nation’s citizens. According to The Indian Express, the day honours the values of “justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity” highlighted in the important document.
The Indian Constitution, drafted under the leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, originally featured manuscripts with 22 historical illustrations. It was handwritten with calligraphy by Prem Behari Narain Raizada. Reportedly, the artwork was done by Nandalal Bose and Shantiniketan artists. The original document is now preserved in helium-filled cases at the Parliament Library.

Significance Of This Day
Besides celebrating the adoption of the Constitution, Samvidhan Divas also celebrates the architects of the document. The day signifies the conclusion of almost three years of debating and drafting by the Constituent Assembly of that time. The day commemorates the world’s lengthiest written constitution and the efforts put together by its framers to establish democracy and a “sovereign, socialist, socialist, and secular” society.
Since its adoption, the Constitution has undergone several changes. This alone shows how the makers were ahead of their times and understood that the Constitution would require several amendments as time goes by.
