Managing waste is not just the responsibility of a few people; everyone has to work together to keep households and institutions clean. Now, to make sure no one takes waste management for granted, the Supreme Court has stepped in and issued fresh directions for better solid waste management across India. Read on to know more!
Supreme Court Imposes Strict Solid Waste Management Rules
In the latest announcement, the Supreme Court has asked authorities to strictly follow the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. As per Moneycontrol, strict action will also be taken against bulk waste generators that do not follow the rules. This includes malls, hotels, hospitals, commercial establishments and large housing societies.
According to the court’s orders, everyone must separate their waste and keep it safely until it is collected. The waste should then be handed over to the proper waste collection system for disposal. These places also cannot generate large amounts of waste and assume that sanitation workers will handle it.

Action Against Violation Of Rules
The directions were given by a Supreme Court bench of Justices SVN Bhatti and NV Anjaria. The court said India’s waste management system needs to be checked properly through a detailed audit.
As per Moneycontrol, a bulk waste generator produces more than 100 kg of waste every day. Any place that has a built-up area of over 20,000 square metres or uses more than 40,000 litres of water daily falls under this category.
The Supreme Court Monitoring Committee (SCMC) will keep a check on whether the given directions are being followed. District Collectors will identify major waste generators in their areas and tell them about their legal duties. They will also inform them about the action they could face if they fail to follow the rules.
If they fail to follow the directions, authorities can temporarily cut electricity or water supply. These services will be resumed once they submit a compliance certificate. The court has also advised the use of technology to keep track of waste management. Uploading geo-tagged photos of waste dumping sites and submitting monthly reports on an online portal will be necessary.
Central government bodies will also be checked. This includes the Railways, Defence Department, public sector undertakings and other ministries. River pollution will also be taken into consideration. The matter was considered after a dispute involving the Bhopal Municipal Corporation and NGT orders on waste management.
