The east coast of India is bracing itself for an oncoming storm. Cyclone Michaung, which has been brewing over the Bay of Bengal for quite some time, is impacting the region. The effects of the storm will most prominently be felt in the South Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Bracing for the storm, the two states have declared a public holiday. Here are all the important details that you would need to know about this particular storm as well as the public holiday.

Cyclone Michaung: Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu Declare Holiday

Since Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu will witness the most severe impact of Cyclone Michaung, the two states have declared a public holiday. In Tamil Nadu, Monday, December 5, has been declared a public holiday. The government has asked offices as well as private companies to let employees work from home or operate on minimal and essential staff only.

In addition to this, educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh’s NTR district and Pondicherry’s Karaikal and Yanam cities will be shut for two days starting from Monday. In Chennai, heavy rainfall has begun in a number of places. According to an article which was recently published by India Today, the intensity of the rains will only increase till December 5.

Regions like Kanchipuram and Thurivallur as well as Chengalpet will witness heavy to very heavy rainfall. It is said that many metro stations will witness waterlogging because of the heavy rain. St. Thomas metro station was also waterlogged and accumulated four feet of water. As per the article, the entrance to the station had been cut off.

Other Important Details To Know About This

Despite these difficulties, the metro services began normally at 5 AM. Passengers were advised to board the metro station at Alandur. Officials of Chennai Metro have begun pumping out excess water from the two-wheeler parking lot. Passengers have also been advised to take precautions before leaving their homes and to do it only if absolutely necessary.

Michaung is pronounced as ‘migjaum.’ The name is suggested by Myanmar (erstwhile Burma) and means strength and resilience. It brewed over the Bay of Bengal and is centred around 230 kilometres east-northeastwards of Puducherry. Over the past six hours, its speed is reported to be 8 kilometres per hour. It is 190 kilometres east-southeast of Chennai and 310 kilometres southeast of Nellore. From Bapatla, it is 410 kilometres south-southeast.

Residents of the people who are living in these regions are advised to exercise utmost caution.
