The ‘City of Joy’, Kolkata, woke up to pelting rain this morning which brought much-needed relief from the sweltering heat. The India Meteorological Department or IMD has recently issued an alert for a cyclone that is soon to come. The rains in Kolkata are an effect of the same cyclone. It is called Cyclone Remal and is said to impact parts of West Bengal, Odisha, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Here are all the other important details that you would need to know about this cyclone.
Cyclone Remal Updates: Rainfall In Kolkata To Continue
Well-marked low pressure area over WC & adj S BoB at 0830 today. To move NEwards and concentrate into Depression over central parts of BoB by 24 mrng, intensify into CS over EC BoB by 25 mrng. To move nearly northwards and reach near Bangladesh adj WB coasts by 26 eve as SCS.

According to an article which was recently published by livemint, this particular cyclonic storm is likely to move northeastwards. The cyclone formed yesterday, May 22 after a low-pressure area formed over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal.
This cyclonic storm, as per the officials from IMD, formed into a deep depression after moving northeastwards. This is predicted to happen by May 24 over central parts of the Bay of Bengal.
The IMD also went on to say that the storm will move further northeastwards and intensify as it moves. This will happen around the evening of May 25. As per its predictions, East Medinipur and South and North 24-Parganas will witness showers on Saturday.

Saturday is also when the sixth phase of Lok Sabha Elections are scheduled. As per the IMD, the cyclone will also impact the weather of other Indian states including Odisha, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
On May 25 and 26, the Balasore region of Odisha is slated to witness light to moderate rainfall. Maharashtra has been experiencing a heatwave so the oncoming storm may provide a brief respite from the heat.
Fisherfolk in the Bay of Bengal region have been asked to not venture out to the sea as it is witnessing rough weather conditions.
