Delhi’s Madame Tussauds Closes Doors Permanently; To Reopen In Another Location

The Madame Tussauds wax museum in Connaught Place, Delhi, which was home to wax statues of Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Nicole Kidman, Lady Gaga and more, is shutting its doors permanently. Reportedly, the response from the visitors in the location was unenthusiastic and many weren’t ready to pay ₹760 for the entry. The museum kept suffering from losses. It was temporarily closed since March 20, 2020 after the announcement of the coronavirus-induced nationwide lockdown. Now, the holding company of the museum, Merlin Entertainments India, has decided to close it down permanently. It is looking for options for reopening it in Gurgaon or Noida.

Madame Tussauds Museum In Delhi’s Connaught Place Won’t Reopen Again

Madame Tussauds, Delhi was India’s first Madame Tussauds museum and was the 23rd Madame Tussauds worldwide. It incorporated wax figures of famous personalities across all genres like film, history, sports, music, entertainment and politics. It housed the wax statues of the iconic and famous personalities of India like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cinematic icon Amitabh Bachchan, Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, the legendary Milkha Singh, yesteryear actor Madhubala, singer Asha Bhosle, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and many more. The museum also had statues of international personalities like Nicole Kidman,  Beyonce and Lady Gaga. Now the 120 wax statues are packed off as the museum holder is vacating the premises. The Museum Might Be Relocated To Gurgaon Or Noida

Merlin Entertainments India had made a mammoth investment for the designing of the outlet in CP. It had been working on the 60:40 model. 60 percent of the statues were meant to be Indian personalities. The rest were meant to be international personalities. The company had launched the museum in CP in November 27 and had also announced an investment of 10 million Euros ( ₹89,89,85,482.50). But due to unenthusiastic response from the visitors and prolonged losses, it is now permanently shutting the CP wing of the museum.

According to an Indian Express report, Anshul Jain, general manager and director, Merlin Entertainments India, has said, “Even though it was a prime location, we realised in due course that there were a lot of issues — encroachment by illegal street vendors, hawkers, parking issues, CP’s Outer Circle being a no-stoppage zone, and the place being overcrowded and unsafe for visiting families with small children.” The owners are thus exploring options in top-notch malls of Noida and Gurgaon for relocating the museum.
