Delhi’s IGI Will Soon Have Two International Terminals; Expansion Plan To Be Complete By Sept 2023

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) is known as the most busy airport in India. This airport might soon have two international terminals. India’s largest airline by domestic share, IndiGo, has asked Delhi International Airport Limited to come up with some facilities to handle the international inflow of passengers. It has asked to come up with facilities for handling international crowds at the upcoming expanded Terminal 1.

Delhi’s IGI Will Have International Terminals

The upcoming expanded Terminal 1 at Delhi’s IGI has been handling all domestic inflow. Currently, IndiGo Airlines flies through all the terminals: T1, T2, and T3. It has been keen on operating all its flights from one place. This is because they want to increase operational efficiency and passenger comfort.

At present, all the international flights flying at Indira Gandhi International Airport are from T3. IndiGo’s website states that they now fly domestically from all three terminals at IGI.

The expansion work at Terminal 1 will be completed by September 2023. The plan for expansion was based on making it an all-domestic terminal. The expansion work was slowed down due to COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021. But the rebound in travel after the pandemic is something that was simply unexpected.

Sticking To The Original Plan

The expansion of Terminal 1 of Delhi’s IGI will currently be carried out according to the original plan. This was decided to avoid any sort of delay in the work as the traffic is rising. Late on, for facilities for international traffic at T1, clearance will be taken from multiple government agencies.

Terminal 1 will handle all the low-cost carriers like IndiGo, Terminal 2 will handle domestic flights of the full-service carriers; and Terminal 3 will handle foreign carriers and Tata Group Airlines.

Passengers tend to reach the wrong terminal and then rush to reach the right one. They find it difficult to move from one terminal to another in the absence of an air train. Hence, to avoid all of this confusion, it is better to designate terminals to airlines rather than have them operate from multiple terminals.
