What seemed like a thought, is now a reality! Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has become the first in the country to become free of usage of single-use plastic. The GMR-led Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) received the certification earlier this week, and couldn’t be more proud!

What’s More?

In order to make sure that eco-friendly measures are taken in order to promote sustainable development, the first step or challenge was the use of single-use plastic. The Prime Minister envisioned that by 2022, the entire country will be free of this; and this is an initiative towards that direction.

‘The Confederation of Indian Industry-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development (CII-ITC CESD) that supports the business community towards achieving sustainability has certified DIAL for its successful voluntary implementation of single-use plastic-free airport measures within IGI Airport’s operations,’ as per PTI reports.

Reduction In Plastic Waste Generation

In September 2018, on ‘World Environment Day’ themed ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, Delhi Airport was one of the first airports in India to make a commitment towards making the establishment ‘single-use-plastic-free’. In an attempt to succeed, they have significantly reduced the use of single-waste plastic within in the premises.

According to data available, ‘some plastic items that are exempt from the list of banned items include security tamper-evident bags, sealed PET bottles, pre-packaged materials from manufacturers meant for sale and compostable plastic bags.’

We commend the efforts of DIAL for taking the lead in such a great eco-friendly initiative and hope that others will follow suit!
