Did Delhi Really See 52.9° C Heat? IMD Officials Investigate Mungeshpur Weather Station Reading And Say…

The weather station at Mungeshpur in Delhi recently recorded some alarmingly high temperatures. It said that the temperature in the region reached as high as 52.9° Celsius. However, officials think that there may be some issue with the weather station and have decided to launch an investigation of the reading. The India Meteorological Department or IMD has sent a team of specialists to investigate the matter further and see if the readings are reliable.

Did Delhi Really See 52.9° Celsius Heat?

According to an article which was recently published by NDTV, the automatic weather station in Mungeshpur has recorded a temperature of 52.9° degrees Celsius. This, if it is true, would be the highest temperature ever recorded in India.

However, as per the officials from IMD, there are a total of 20 weather stations in Delhi. Of these, 14 have recorded a drop in the temperature in the National Capital. An average range of 45° Celsius to 50° Celsius was recorded by these stations across Delhi.

As per Dr. Mohapatra, who is the Director General of IMD, the reading from the Mungeshpur weather station is an outlier. Hence, a team of specialists have been sent to the Mungeshpur facility to investigate the authenticity of the readings.

Mungeshpur Weather Station Readings To Be Investigated

It is speculated that local factors might have influenced the readings. One of the reasons speculated for such a high reading is the hot winds from Rajasthan. The outskirts of Delhi are some of the first places that are hit by the arid gusts from Rajasthan.

Hence, it is likely that these winds contributed to the high readings. The recent rain that the city saw is also a culprit in the increased humidity and temperatures. The primary weather station in Delhi is the one at Safdarjung.

It recently recorded a record-breaking high temperature of 46.8 degrees Celsius which is the highest in 79 years.
