Ten years after Emirates EK521 was involved in an incident while landing at Dubai International Airport, a passenger’s family is looking back at the response that followed with gratitude. The remembrance highlights the quick work of Emirates staff, airport teams, and emergency responders who helped passengers get to safety and supported affected families afterwards.

Emirates EK521 Is Remembered 10 Years Later

Emirates flight EK521 was travelling from Thiruvananthapuram to Dubai on August 3, 2016, with 282 passengers and 18 crew members on board. The Boeing 777 was involved in an incident while landing at Dubai International Airport. Even after the crash-landing, everyone on board was evacuated safely. Thanks to Emirates and the quick response of its teams and Dubai International Airport staff.

A decade later, one passenger’s son has revisited the experience in a heartfelt remembrance in his post on LinkedIn. His father had been travelling to Dubai for a family wedding when the incident occurred.

The family initially feared the worst. His mother called to say that his father had been involved, then quickly confirmed that he was safe. When he eventually spoke to his father, he was still at the airport, making his way towards safety. He had suffered only a small cut from the evacuation slide.

Emirates Supported Passengers After The Incident

What stands out in the family’s recollection is not only what happened during the evacuation but also what followed.

Emirates said at the time that its staff met passengers and provided assistance based on their needs. Passengers who remained at the airport were given refreshments and rest areas while the airline worked on onward arrangements. Others were rebooked, while passengers who chose to stay in Dubai for several days were provided with hotel accommodation and dedicated support.

That response has become a central part of the family’s memory of the day.

The passenger’s son also recalled that his father was alone in Dubai after the incident. Wanting to be beside him, he travelled to Dubai the following day, when Emirates had resumed the Thiruvananthapuram-Dubai service.

Remembering Dubai’s Emergency Response

The Emirates’ response was only one part of a much larger operation.

Dubai Airport’s emergency teams were activated immediately, while firefighters and other responders worked at the scene. The rapid evacuation meant all 282 passengers and 18 crew members were able to leave the aircraft safely.

One firefighter, Jassim Isa Al Balushi, lost his life during the rescue operation while helping protect others. His sacrifice remains an important part of the story of EK521 and the emergency response that followed.

The family remembrance therefore looks beyond the frightening images from that afternoon. It focuses instead on the people who responded, the care offered afterwards, and the systems that helped passengers reach safety.
