Recently, PM Modi visited Lakshadweep to promote tourism in the Union Territory. A slew of pictures were shared which showed the Prime Minister attempting snorkelling and taking walks on the beach. Three Maldivian Ministers made derogatory remarks regarding the PM’s visit. This prompted a whirlwind of controversy. EaseMyTrip, a famous online travel platform, in solidarity with the Modi government, suspended bookings of all flights to Maldives and instead is promoting flights to Lakshadweep.

EaseMyTrip, an online travel platform, recently launched a campaign called #ChaloLakshadweep. The campaign aims to promote tourism in the Union Territory over the country of Maldives.
In addition to starting this campaign, it also suspended all flights to Maldives in solidarity with the country as well as the Prime Minister. According to an article which was recently published by Business Today, this particular campaign incited a lot of controversy.
The three Maldivian ministers who made the derogatory remarks were suspended by the government. What is more, even celebrities and renowned figures spoke publicly against it and asked Indians to visit Lakshadweep instead of Maldives.

The Maldivian government has since attempted to clarify its status on the matter. It explicitly stated that the comments made by the three ministers do not, in any way, reflect an official government stance and that the views expressed were their own.
It has therefore suspended the three ministers and expressed sympathy with the outrage in India. It also said that India was a key ally and that the country’s outrage was justified.
Since this controversy sparked, there have been a significant number of cancellations to the country by Indians.
