The Mainland Serow (Capricornis sumatraensis), a rarely sighted and elusive mammal, has recently been spotted in the dense forests of Assam’s Raimona National Park. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN), it is a vulnerable species of mammal. The image was jointly taken by forest officials and conservationists.
Mainland Serow At Raimona National Park
The first photographic proof of the ‘Mainland Serow,’ found in Raimona National Park, Assam, is a breakthrough for biodiversity protection. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, it is a vulnerable species of mammal (IUCN). Collaboration between forest officials and conservationists resulted in the photo being taken. This massive discovery has been confirmed twice by members of the biodiversity group ‘Aaranyak’ and staff from the forest department.
The Mainland Serow is a medium-sized bovid that belongs to the subfamily Caprinae, which includes goats, sheep, and their relatives. It is a solitary and shy creature, making it challenging to observe in the wild. The Serow is distinguished by its robust build, short limbs, and thick, dark coat. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the Mainland Serow as Vulnerable on its Red List of Threatened Species. Additionally, it is present in neighbouring areas like Bhutan’s Royal Manas National Park and the Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary, indicating possible advantages for cross-border conservation.

One Of India’s New National Parks
Raimona National Park, located in the Kokrajhar district of Assam, is a relatively new addition to India’s network of protected areas. It was declared a national park in June 2021 and forms part of the larger Manas Biosphere Reserve. The park has rich biodiversity, including numerous species of flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the region. The recent sighting of the Mainland Serow in Raimona is significant as it highlights the park’s role in conserving wildlife and maintaining ecological balance.
Many vulnerable and endangered species are found in the park, including the newly discovered Mainland Serow. Ensuring the connectivity of habitats through wildlife corridors and mitigating human-wildlife conflict are critical for long-term survival. This adaptability is crucial for its survival, given the varying environmental conditions
