You might soon be able to experience the old charm of the temples of Kashi from the comfort of your couch. A project named Virtual Experimental Museum ( VEM), developed with assistance from the department of history of Arts, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and the National Museum of Archives will soon go live. And give a glimpse into and around 60 ancient shrines and sculptures of Varanasi. This is an initiative by the Kashi Vishwanath Temple administration. The temples within the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor will also undergo renovation. Read on to know the details.

A Virtual Museum Might Soon Come Up For Exploring Ancient Kashi Temples

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is backing this ‘virtual museum-cum-web repository ‘ project of Varanasi. The project covers an area of about 5 lakh sq ft. Reportedly, nearly 300 buildings were also procured and demolished to meet the requirement of this vast area. The authorities discovered around 60 temples and several sculptures during this process. Many of these temples were also inside houses. Even the appearance of Ganga in Varanasi improved amid lockdown, due to the dip in the pollution levels.

A team formed by the members of BHU and National Museum of Archives will also gather information about these ancient structures, such as when they were built, who built them, etc. The virtual museum will also have high-resolution images of the temples and detailed information on them.

Project To Commence By September End

As per the Hindustan Times report, chief executive of Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Gaurang Rathi, said to media houses, “Architecture of about a dozen of these temples is amazing and carving on stones is magnificent and very special. In addition, 30 (out of 60) of these temples are mentioned in Kashi Khand (section) of the Skanda Puran. So it is very important to renovate and preserve these temples in Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham area. We are going to do the preservation with the help of BHU and the National Museum of Archives.” The first portion of the museum might be ready by the end of September.
