These unusual clouds usually indicate the arrival of heavy rainfall, hailstorm or lightning. They are usually in relation to thunderstorms. As Argentina’s overcast skies were covered in a blanket of Mammatus clouds, it left the locals confused. Last year, a giant mushroom-shaped cloud in Ukraine led to fears of a nuclear blast as the clouds appeared 60 miles from Chernobyl, the site of the world’s most devastating nuclear disaster in 1968.
