If snow excites you, then winter in Kashmir will have your heart. In the cold months, Kashmir turns into a white paradise with temperatures dipping to sub-zero levels. Thus, exploring Kashmir in winter is an adventure too. Now, the state is opening Karnah, Sonmarg and Gurez as well for winter tourism. These destinations are popularly known for summer tourism as for around the last 70 years, Kashmir used to shut them down in winter due to challenging roads and low visibility. But now, the UT is introducing new facilities to boost winter tourism in these destinations. Doodhpathri, a bowl-shaped valley in Kashmir’s Budgam district, will also get recognised as a winter tourism destination.

The government plans to roll out adventure sports activities in these destinations and develop ski slopes too. Skiing is a popular winter activity in Kashmir’s Gulmarg. Now, the activity will be introduced in other destinations too. Also, the authority is mulling over launching chopper services to snow-capped destinations.

These initiatives can give a massive boost to Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism. Kashmir is largely dependent on its tourism industry, and introducing new winter tourism options can catalyse the overall growth of the UT’s economy.
